課程概述

A reading seminar on Japanese music-related materials. It consists of two major parts focusing respectively on historical and contemporary writings, intended to cover various types and forms of written texts such as official documents, newspapers, magazines, biographies, scholarly articles, etc. Its emphasis will be on the historical part which deals with publications in the colonial period and related to Taiwanese, Japanese and other musics. This seminar also includes an introduction to how to find and utilize Japanese materials. It takes full advantage of abundant resources available offline and online at NTU including the main library and the Graduate Institute of Musicology, but it will also pay a visit to archives in and around Taipei if necessary and possible.

課程目標
The main purposes of this course include; to get to know how and where to find Japanese music-related materials; to become familiar with Japanese texts in different forms and styles; to carefully read and comprehend them in terms of key concepts and logical framework; to critically examine and contextualize them according to socio-historical backgrounds, ideological orientations, theoretical concerns, etc.
Note that the course is NOT intended to learn the language itself; it is rather designed to learn in due course how to utilize Japanese materials for graduate research. As such, it requires the minimum of proficiency in Japanese to read texts in advance although the instructor will persistently encourage students to achieve their goals.
課程要求
1. Preparation: Read and research on required texts and translate into English or Chinese before each class. All students are asked to read part of the texts and discuss on their contents in each seminar.
2. Presentation/term paper: All students give an oral presentation in English based on their readings and findings of Japanese texts at the end of the semester, and develop it into 5 - 10-page English term paper to be submitted due by 6/20.
